Last week we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with KES decorating our classroom doors with a book our whole class has enjoyed. Our class chose Big Al. In addition to decorating our doors we wrote a book recommendation to explain why Big Al was such a great book in our opinion. Below is a picture of our door and a video of the book recommendation that we created using the website Tellagami and iMovie. We hope you enjoy it :)
Our class has been working very hard to read more deeply to get to know our characters better. Throughout the unit students have been thinking about the way characters can be described by their actions, their wants and how characters deal with problems. Students have been paying close attention to the way their characters change throughout the book they are reading.
Our class has been very excited to be working with Mrs. Williams on a new unit of study in science through Project Lead the Way! During this unit students have been investigating and classifying different kinds of materials by their observable properties. They have been learning about states of matter and properties of materials including insulators and conductors. Students have been given a real world problem that they must try to find a solution to based on everything that they have been learning about the states of matter and the properties of materials. Students were introducted to the design problem by three characters- Angelina, Mylo, and Suzi. They are challenged to keep ice pops cold during a soccer game – without a cooler. Our class has been applying their newly learned knowledge and skills to determine the best materials to solve this design problem. Then they must evaluate how thier design worked and what improvements may need to be made.
The class has been extremely focused the task at hand. Below you can see our class hard at work studying, exploring and testing out materials that they will use to create thier final design. Students are getting close to completing thier final projects. Check back to see what thier final designs looked like :)

Our class spent time this November learning about The First Thanksgiving. Students have been taking a virtual field trip back in time, through the Scholastic website, where they have been learning about the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Tribe. Students have been working together to explore the daily life of both the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Tribe. Students are comparing and contrasting the information they are learning about each using Venn Diagrams. Students are comparing and contrasting the housing, clothing, food, chores, schools, and games each group played. Not only has this project helped students to better understand the lives of those who faced that First Thanksgiving, but it has also helped students to continue to think about how to organize information that helps to show how two things are alike and different. You can continue to this research with your child by visiting the site: https://www.scholastic.com/scholastic_thanksgiving/.
It is hard to believe, but Second Grade is finishing up our second unit of study in reading. This unit focused on becoming nonfiction reading experts. Below our some of the charts we have created, with teaching points we focused on throughout this unit. Students are celebrating all their work that they have done to become experts on their topics by becoming a tour guide of their topic to share with the class.

Welcome to second grade! My name is Mrs. Esposito and I am thrilled to be your teacher this year! It’s going to be a fun year full of lots of learning and new adventures. Most of all, I can’t wait to learn all about you, but until then, here is a little bit about me. My wonderful husband and I have two amazing boys; Peyton who is 6 years old and going into First Grade and Maddox who is 3 ½ years old. We have had a busy summer enjoying the outdoors, fun day trips, and going on vacation to New Hampshire and Lake George. Some of the things I love to do the most are read and spend time outside biking, running, and playing with my family. Another thing that I really love is being a teacher! I have been teaching at KES for 9 years now. I love to watch my students grow and blossom throughout the year and I am looking forward to doing that with our class this year too!
On the attached sheet are the directions for your first assignment as a second grader! It will be a great way to introduce yourself to our class. Like I said before, I can hardly wait to learn all about you!!
Supplies: All materials will be provided in the classroom, but if you wish to bring some of your own items, here are a few suggestions.
· Erasers
· Pointed scissors (Fiskars brand works great)
· A pencil box to hold your items
· Crayons-24 colors
· 1 pack # 2 pencils
Snacks: We will have a daily working snack in the morning. Please bring in healthy items and a water bottle that you can use throughout the day.
Notes: The school must be notified by a note or phone call if there are different arrangements for pick up, bus or after school activities. A note is necessary if you are being picked up by your parents or another parent, you are going home on a different bus, or you are staying after school for an activity, afterschool, etc. Notes make dismissal time run more smoothly for both the students and myself. Please keep this in mind for the first day of school.
As the first day of school nears I would like to give you a chance to stop in to take a peek at our room. Please feel free to pop-in for a visit on Tuesday, August 30th from 2:00-3:00. If you are not able to make it, I will look forward to seeing you on the first day of school! Enjoy the rest of your summer! Your Teacher,
Mrs. Esposito
Me Bag Directions
Please fill a paper bag (this will be your “ME Bag”) with things that tell something important about you. For example, since I like to read I might put in my favorite book or a drawing of my favorite book. You will share your items with your classmates the first week of school so they can learn about you and the things you like. You may decorate the outside of the bag any way you wish but be sure to mark your name on the outside.
There are some rules to follow:
1. Only bring things that fit inside the bag.
2. The items can't be too heavy - you should be able to carry the
bag yourself.
3. Only bring items that can be left at school for the week.
4. Bring no more than 5 items.
5. Make sure you can use each item to tell something important
about yourself.
6. Most importantly, have fun with this activity!!

Second graders have been learning how to write like a scientist. In order to do so students have been learning more about the Scientific Method. Students have been learning how to write a science lab report. They have been creating a question they are trying to find the answer to. Students have been creating a hypothesis of what they think will happen, then they have been creating a procedure they will use to help them test out their hypothesis. Students have been collecting data from their experiments and using that data to explain their results and form some conclusions. Check out some photos of the class in action while they work together to brain storm how they can make their cars go farther on the carpeted floor. Some groups chose different ramps and some groups chose to change the height of their ramps. ALL students had a great time while learning so much about writing like a scientist and the Scientific Method!
Welcome To Room 32!
