Yesterday we got the opportunity to visit the whole school Writing Celebration and read writing pieces from every kid in the school. We walked around the tables reading poems, small moment stories, how to books, and information pieces. Kids also wrote positive feedback for writers on sticky notes to let their peers know what they liked about their piece. It was a great time and showcased a lot of great work by our KES community of learners!
it was our first full week of school in a while and we made it! This week was full of end of unit celebrations to wrap up our learning on poetry and our reading unit on amping up our reading powers to read longer books. We also dove into new units in math, reading, and writing. It was a busy week! In reading, we ended our unit on amping up our reading by working in strategy clubs to work together to get better at fluency, literary language, and keeping track of longer books. Kids created their own plans for what their group would work on and how to run it. We wrapped up their work by being reading researchers and writing our own news alerts, teaching about what second grade readers do. It was a lot of fun! Next, we're diving into a unit all about getting to know our characters. In writing, we celebrated the end of our poetry unit by choosing a star poem to edit and revise to share at our whole school writing celebration next week. The kids also organized their other poems and illustrated a cover for their very own poetry anthology. It was a nice way to celebrate and share all their great work during the unit with their classmates. Next we'll be writing gripping realistic fictions stories about a character that has a problem and tries to solve it. In math, we ended our unit on shapes and time and began our next unit on addition and subtraction within 100. In this unit we will learn a variety of strategies to add two digit numbers using place value. This week we learned to use a tens and ones chart and place value pictures to add. The kids are doing great! Finally, in social studies we learned about the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of peaceful protest to bring about change. We read a wonderful children's book about sit-ins and another about the brave little girl Ruby Bridges. It was another great week in Room 30. Enjoy your long weekend! 😊 Fun sharing our poetry with each other!
i hope you and your family had a great holiday season. The kids really enjoyed making all of your surprises and wrapping them up to give. They came back to school full of fun stories filled with family, trips, and presents.
