The class filled their pompom jar this week and got to spin the "wheel of wow" to earn a class reward. We landed on holiday makerspace and the kids were allowed to us any of our classroom supplies (including lots of glitter) to make something for the holidays. Kids made ornaments, wall hangings, glitter gingerbread houses, and holiday decorations. They had a blast being creative and getting to bring their holiday ideas to life!
We have been having so much fun recently enjoying the snowy weather and getting in the spirit with our week of spirit days. December is flying buy! We have also been enjoying our new math unit about 2-D shapes. We are learning how to identify shapes by counting their sides and vertices. We have explored all the different ways to make triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons using our geoboards. In reading, we have been learning about literary language and how readers should stop and think "what is the author really saying". We also started our twin book reading where partners read the same book and discuss it to help each other tackle longer books. Partners stop at the end of chapters and talk about the most important event. Writing has been a flurry of poetry! The kids have stuffed their folders full of poems that try to turn ordinary language into extraordinary language! Of course we have also been getting into the holiday spirit by learning about December holidays. So far we've learned about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. Ask you're child about what they've learned so far. Have a great weekend!
We finished up our three week makerspace cycle with Mrs. Williamson last week. The kids worked in teams to build different structures out of popsicles, paper cups, and wooden cubes. Each challenge required the kids to be creative, use teamwork, and revise their thinking. Plus, it was a lot of fun too! We can't wait to go back in January for our next adventure in the makerspace room!
