We had a great day playing Halloween themed math games, writing Halloween stories, and of course our favorite part...the Halloween Parade! It was a fun day for all! Thank you to all the parents who helped make it happen. What a beautiful end to a great week. Friday was such a beautiful day and we enjoyed playing outside after two days without recess. We also continued to really enjoy our nonfiction work in both reading and writing. In reading we learned how to preview our book and to look for places where our book surprises us because this is where we our brains are growing with new learning the most! Ask your child what parts we look at to get ready to read nonfiction. In writing, we are working on teaching even more in our books. We've learned how to use twin sentences, comparisons, and color, texture, and size words.
In math, we learned different ways to represent 3-digit numbers. We know how to write numbers in standard form, expanded form, place value model form, and word form. We had a lot of fun practicing identifying all the forms playing write the room! science this week was was totally awesome! The kids got to design and build their models to help prevent houses from being damaged in a landslide. The kids had so much fun working together and testing their models. Make sure you check out their faces in the pictures! Have a great weekend! 😊 We reached 36 days of second grade today. Wow!! This week we wrapped up our narrative writing unit by fancying up one star piece and sharing it with a small group of classmates. Then our classmates gave us a "glow" or compliment about our piece.
We also had a Book Cafe in our class to celebrate all the great books we fell in love with during our first reading unit. Kids picked their favorite book, wrote a short summary about it, and then "dished" it up at our restaurant for other students to take a "taste". The kids had a lot of fun. In both reading and writing we then dived into the exciting world of nonfiction where we are reading to become experts and writing to teach others. In math we started our next math unit all about place value. This week we practiced building and writing 3-digit numbers, as well as learning new vocabulary words digit and value. Ask your child what the value is of the underlined digit in 427. Phew! It was a busy week. Have a nice weekend! It was another great week in our class! In math we wrapped up our first math unit by reviewing all the different types of comparing word problems, making a pictograph of our eye color, and learning a fun new fact fluency game called Scratch 'em Off! Ask your child what set of math facts we practiced in our new game. In writing, we started to wrap up our Small Moment unit by using a checklist to revise and edit our pieces. The kids loved using their blue revision pens! Ask your child what they picked as there star piece. Partner time was our focus this week in reading. We practiced asking questions to try and keep our conversations going back and forth like being on a seesaw. Finally, we wrapped up the Week by having our very first Mystery Reader! Thank you Mrs. Medina for coming in and reading such a fun book Room on the Broom. The kids loved it!
Have a great weekend! This Week in Project Lead the Way with Mrs. Williams, we learned all about the different forces that can cause erosion by reading a books and watching an erosion presentation on our iPads. We finished the week by starting a hands-on experiment to see which force, wind, earthquake, glacier, or water, will cause the most erosion. The kids had a blast recreating the different forces over their "land" and observing what happened.
We had a great time this morning reading with moms, dads, grandmas, and friends. It was so nice to see everyone snuggled up enjoying good books. Thank you to everyone who came in and had fun reading with us.
Yesterday we have a visit from our local volunteer firefighters. They taught us important safety rules like when there is smoke you get out and stay out, you should always have a safety plan with a designated meeting place, and it's best to sleep with your bedroom door closed to slow the spread of smoke and fire. We also loved that our firefighters took the time to answer all our questions, shown us their cool gear, and their trucks! It was a great day. Afterwards, we wrote thank you letters to the firefighters to thank them for all their service to our community! Thank you firefighters! |
